Sore Throat Symptoms
A sore throat can be painful, frustrating and down right annoying, but knowing the symptoms of a sore throat are important when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. If you have a sore throat, swollen glands, fever or chills, or general discomfort, it could be the sign of a viral infection or bacterial infection.
Common signs and symptoms for a sore throat include:
- Pain or a scratchy sensation in the throat that worsens with swallowing or talking.
- Difficulty swallowing
- Dry throat
- Sore and swollen glands in your neck or jaw.
- Red swollen tonsils
- White patches or pus on your tonsils.
- Hoarse or muffled voice
A strep infection, or strep throat, is most common in children, but can affect everyone of all ages. People with a strep throat infection experience discomfort, fever, swelling and several other common symptoms. It is important to seek medical care from an urgent care clinic to find out if your strep test is negative or positive so that you can potentially be prescribed antibiotic treatment such as penicillin or amoxicillin.
Rare Causes of Sore Throat
In some, extremely rare cases, a sore throat may create a medical emergency that requires dialing 9-1-1 and not going to an urgent care. If you believe you or a loved one’s airway is being blocked as the result of a sore throat, please call 9-1-1.
An infected area of tissue (abscess) in the throat can cause a sore throat via a bacterial throat infection or the small cartilage “lid” that covers the windpipe swells, blocking airflow (epiglottitis). Both causes can block the airway, creating a medical emergency.
Why Choose Urgent Care for Sore Throat Treatment?
A sore throat might seem like it can be treated with just rest and over-the-counter medicine. However, there are many cases in which a sore throat needs a higher-level of antibiotics or treatment (such as strep throat), and waiting to get looked at can be the difference between weeks of discomfort and rapid relief — especially if you have a sore throat when swallowing.
A trip to our urgent care clinic can result in your sore throat being diagnosed and treated, allowing you to receive the proper medication, get advice on what steps to take next and have you feeling better, sooner.
